 Incoming Patients

We are very happy that you have chosen to consult with us. We have at our disposal many advanced and innovative therapies that are not available anywhere else on the east coast. This allows us to select from a broad range of new interventional medical therapies, as well as, custom designed innovative alternative and complementary procedures specifically designed for your needs.

We look forward to meeting with you and formulating a treatment plan to meet your needs. Our goal at James River Comprehensive Pain Management is to reduce pain, improve function and restore your quality of life through the use of minimally-invasive pain relief procedures, alternative medicine and conventional medical management coordinated with physical therapy and psychological intervention when appropriate.

Referral From Your Physician

Prior to calling us for an appointment, we require that your primary care physician contact our office by mail or fax with a patient referral request detailing your reason for referral, including your current medical conditions, recent diagnostic testing, prior treatment modalities, and consults from other physicians. Following a careful review of the information provided, a determination will be made regarding our ability to provide you with suitable services and we will contact you to schedule a consultation.

Please be aware that granting initial consultation appointments do not necessarily imply, nor guarantee, that we will assume or provide ongoing care and management of your pain issues. Also be aware that we will not issue, write, or renew any schedule II pain medication(s) that you may be currently receiving from other physicians during your initial visit. Therefore, do not terminate or jeopardize your relationship with physicians providing your current medical services.

For Your First Visit

Please arrive at our office 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time to allow for any administrative issues.  Bring with you any recent diagnostic testing that may have been preformed including CT scans, MRI studies, EMG's, Nerve conduction studies etc. that you may have had performed.  Bring a complete list of all the medications that you are currently taking, including the strength and frequency of dosing.  In addition, please bring any over-the-counter products, supplements and vitamins you are using.

Reimbursement Issues

Although we do participate directly with many commercial medical plans, if yours is not among them, we would be glad to assist you in filling your health claims forms so that you may obtain reimbursement from your insurance company.  Many of our patients are reimbursed for all or most of the treatment costs.  And of course we would be happy to answer any of your questions.

Please be aware that it is your responsibility to know and understand your individual insurance coverage, including its limitations, deductibles, copays, exclusions, preauthorizations, referrals etc. While our staff will make every reasonable effort to be both knowledgeable and helpful, it is impossible for us to know all the contractual obligations that you might have with your insurance company.

While some progressive medical insurance companies currently cover innovative, alternative and complementary medicine costs, other companies do not as yet recognize the value of alternative approaches. Each health policy must be reviewed to determine alternative medical benefits.
